As my workshop clients frequently ask what filters are in my camera bag, I thought it would make a good topic for a blog. Over the last 22 years I have tried almost every filter on the market ranging in cost from most affordable to most expensive. I have learned what works for me, and what doesn’t.

While I have a set of great filters that screw on, I prefer the slide in or magnetic style filters. Threading filters while on the beach or rocky surface is an accident waiting to happen for me, and the there types are easier for me to use. from about 9 AM – 5PM or so the light is strong so using magnetic filters that pop on the front of my lens allows me to get the slow shutter speeds I want. In the early morning and later afternoon I use graduated hard Neutral Density filters because at the ocean I have a flat horizon. If in the jungle I would use soft graduated filters as the horizon is not evident. When the sun is low on horizon I use a reverse 3 stop graduated ND filter. All these filters are made by Break Through Photography and available online
